The word “Sherwani” comes from the Persian word “Shirwar” which means long coat that is worn over a Kurta (Indian shirt). This coat has a wide collarless front opening decorated with embroidery or passementerie such as buttons or pleats at neckline, sleeves end as well as pant legs hemline; sometimes there are buttons on each side of cuffs too!
